How to read and verify a SCAC code
- A SCAC is two to four capital letters, for example ABFS. It identifies the carrier, not the freight.
- Match it to the carrier on your booking or rate quote; some carriers use different codes for different divisions.
- Check the carrier's own published documents, or the official NMFTA SCAC service, before printing.
- Enter the code in the SCAC field of your Bill of Lading.

SCAC lookup questions
What is a SCAC code?
SCAC stands for Standard Carrier Alpha Code. It is a two-to-four-letter carrier identifier assigned and maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA).
Where does the SCAC go on a Bill of Lading?
Enter the booked carrier’s code in the SCAC field alongside the carrier name. Check the code for the actual service you booked; a company may use different codes for different operating entities or services.
Is a SCAC code the same as an NMFC code?
No. A SCAC identifies the transportation company. An NMFC item number identifies the commodity, and freight class describes how that commodity is rated. You may need both identifiers on a Bill of Lading.
What if my carrier is not listed?
An absent result only means the carrier is not in this selected list. It does not mean the carrier has no SCAC or that its code is invalid. Ask the carrier or use NMFTA’s official SCAC service for broader coverage and current status.
